Need a Ride? Here Are Your Transportation Options

Many people are unaware that transportation to medical appointments may already be covered through their insurance or healthcare program. Below are some of the most common ways to obtain Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT).

Coverage and Program Options

Transportation assistance may be available through insurance, healthcare programs, facilities, or care teams. Start with the option that matches your current coverage or care setting.

Medicaid Waiver Programs

Participants enrolled in Medicaid Waiver programs, including MI Choice Waiver and similar community-based programs, may qualify for transportation to approved medical appointments. Transportation is typically arranged through your Supports Coordinator or Case Manager.

Michigan Medicaid (MDHHS)

If you have traditional Medicaid (Fee-for-Service), you may be eligible for transportation assistance through your local Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) office. Contact your local MDHHS Community Resource Coordinator to request transportation for covered medical appointments.

Medicaid Health Plans (HMO)

If you receive Medicaid through a health plan, transportation is usually arranged through your plan’s transportation provider or broker. Depending on your health plan, transportation may be coordinated by SafeRide Health, MTM, Modivcare, or other contracted transportation brokers. Call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card to schedule a ride.

Hospice Agencies

Many hospice providers cover transportation related to hospice services or medically necessary appointments. If you are receiving hospice care, ask your hospice case manager if transportation can be arranged.

Skilled Nursing and Rehab

Residents of nursing homes, assisted living communities, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities often have transportation arranged directly by the facility. Speak with your social worker, transportation coordinator, or discharge planner for assistance.

Workers’ Compensation

If your injury is covered under Workers’ Compensation, medically necessary transportation may be covered by your workers’ compensation insurance carrier or claims administrator. Contact your adjuster or case manager for authorization before scheduling transportation.

Hospital Case Managers

Many hospitals assist patients with arranging transportation following procedures, treatments, or discharge. If you’re currently receiving care, ask your hospital’s Case Management or Social Work department about transportation options.

Private Pay Transportation

If you do not qualify for one of the programs above, private transportation is always available. All Valley Transportation provides safe, reliable transportation for doctor appointments, dialysis, chemotherapy, hospital admissions and discharges, physical therapy, long-distance medical appointments, family medical visits, special events, and personal transportation.
